What FedEx Earnings Say About Global Recovery
Marc Chandler submits:At the end of last week, Federal Express (FDX) reported Q3 earnings. Rarely are corporate earnings reviewed closely by currency strategists, but this report seems to shed light on the global economic recovery. FedEx, like others in this space, typically do well in the beginning of economic recoveries. Its quarterly profit more than doubled due to a strong pick-up in Asian export volumes. The high profit-margin "International Priority" business jumped almost 18%. The volume of daily domestic packages was up a little more than 1%. This would seem to confirm the relative strength of the Asian economies and the improved trade flows.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
United Airlines Sees April Traffic Hike
Zacks.com submits: United Airlines, a wholly owned subsidiary of UAL Corporation (UAUA), announced on Monday a 0.6% year-over-year increase in its February traffic, measured by revenue passenger miles. Capacity, measured by available seat miles, declined 1.2% from the prior-year quarter, leading to a 150 basis point increase in load factor, or average occupancy, to 81.4% from 79.9% in the year-ago period. For the second quarter 2010, available seat miles are expected to be up in the 0.3−1.3% range. United Airlines saw a 23% increase in unit revenue, measured by passenger revenue per available seat mile (PRASM), a key metric in airlines. This was in line with management’s expectations. Reductions in available seat miles or capacity due to volcanic eruptions during the month of April also boosted PRASM. Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
Toyota: Recall Rerun?
Zacks.com submits: The U.S. government has sped up its investigation into Toyota Motor's (TM) Corolla and Matrix vehicles on the back of a possible engine defect that could cause them to stall while in motion. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the investigation began on August 18 and includes the vehicles of model years 2005, 2006 and 2007. The defect could stem either from improper coating applied to circuit boards or a crack in the surface of a glass coating in the engine control units.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
