| Don't Let a Journalist Evaluate Cash for Clunkers Monday's WSJ article: Clunkers in Practice: One of Washington's All Time Dumb Ideas proves one of my long time suspicions: Most newspaper journalists write because they don't have enough sense to hold a business job. (Proof: look at circulation of newspapers now that they have competition from the Internet.)From a business perspective there are two issues on whether cash for clunkers was worthwhile: the first is the long-term value proposition which was to come from energy savings and the second is short-term stimulus which is the effect it had on total sales. Thursday Update: Housing and Toyota Wall Street Strategies submits:By Charles PayneThe market has been in a tug-o-war all session long. The carryover from Wednesday's (lack thereof) confidence numbers were mitigated by solid earnings reports, but the new homes data knocked the wind off the rally even though it means lower rates for a while. Of course, the notion of lower rates is a double-edge sword that Ben Bernanke has to deal with today. How to exude confidence even while suggesting rates will have to remain low for a long time. The market likes the news, but it's bittersweet to say the very least. At some point we want the Fed to hike rates because the economy is ready to run without training wheels and booster rockets.
