Why Overseas Shipholding (And You) Should Buy DHT Maritime
Benjamin Mackovak submits:Sifting through the beaten and the unknown is where investors are most likely to find the greatest pricing inefficiencies and resulting alpha opportunities in the stock market. The pricing inefficiencies that I look for are unique situations where the stock market is essentially selling a $5 dollar bill for four bucks. These opportunities can arise for many different reasons such as investor apathy, liquidity-driven selling, information asymmetries, corporate mismanagement, etc. These opportunities are uncommon and require a lot of work to properly identify (most cheap stocks are cheap for a good reason) but ultimately should lead to outsized gains over time. One such opportunity that I see in the market right now is DHT Maritime (DHT).Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
Take the Train or the Plane?
Elyse Andrews submits: In my last issue, I wrote about my many recent travels, including a quick trip to New York City last weekend. I had a bad feeling going into the trip–the weather prediction was not favorable and I felt my travels had been too good to be true so far–call it a premonition. And that feeling turned out to be right. My flight home to Boston was canceled because of the wet weather and I was unable to get through to Delta (DAL) via phone, email and Twitter. So I took matters into my own hands, booked a train ticket and high-tailed it out of New York.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
BorgWarner: A Safe Choice in a Red Hot Sector
Trader Mark submits:I try not to make it a habit of buying stocks after they go up 9% in a session, but obviously today is a "special" day where that is the rule rather than the exception. BorgWarner (BWA) is an auto supplier that I have been eyeing for a while as the sector has been on fire. It has one of the best reputations in the space and its sub sector has some secular growth to it in terms of fuel efficiency, whereas many other names are just pure cyclicals. That said, less well run or smaller suppliers probably offer more upside as they are more up speculators' alleys, but I'll go with the "safer" choice as I reviewed about 5-6 options in the space. The company reported stellar earnings two weeks ago with a huge increase in guidance. It gapped up over $44 and, of course, filled that gap quickly during last week's correction. So we actually have a chance to enter about 10% below its "gap up" price (i.e. the same price it was before earnings), even though the stock is sharply up today.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
Pension Obligations Could Still Sink General Motors
Ravi Nagarajan submits:General Motors took the first step toward a new public offering last week with the filing of a massive Form S-1 with the SEC. While exact terms of the offering are not known yet, Barron’s has estimated that the IPO transaction may be worth $15 billion and would result in a market capitalization of $60 billion. With the United States Treasury owning over 60 percent of the company, the IPO represents a partial exit strategy for Uncle Sam and an opportunity for GM to shed the “Government Motors” stigma that has negatively impacted consumer perceptions.
