CSX Beats on Increased Revenues
Zacks.com submits: CSX Corporation’s (CSX) first quarter earnings of 78 cents per share were ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 69 cents. Earnings were up 22% from 64 cents in the year-ago quarter. Results were helped by increased revenues due to volume improvement in chemicals, agricultural products, metals, fertilizers and automotives in the wake of the improving economy. Revenue increased 11% year-over-year to $2.35 billion due to volume improvements in the recovering economy. North American Auto Production Update

Re-stocking of inventories is still going on in the economy, but we are due for a slowdown unless we see an uptick in employment and consumer confidence. These macro-indicators will probably lead unit sales in the future.In terms of Japanese car companies, we expect a deterioration in earnings for Toyota (TM) given the strength of the yen and the end of government subsidies. Rail Traffic Continues to Rise
Todd Sullivan submits: Total North American rail traffic rose to 692.5k cars last week making it the best week in the past two years. When we combine this with what we are seeing in temporary employment trends, the two data points back the view I hold that not only is a “double dip” not likely, but now becoming a highly remote scenario. Also, The Conference Board Help Wanted Online Index continues to trend higher with a Sept 2010 gain of 59,900. Fears that the economy is not in recovery or is stalling or is doing something else other than recovering are misplaced with this type of data.
