Carmakers Continue to Consolidate
Old Trader submits:Given the rocky state of the auto market in almost all of the developed economies, there's little wonder that car makers continue to consolidate in an effort to trim costs, and to lighten the load of developing new, green products for their markets. The latest "hook up" is PSA Peugeot Citroen's (PEUGY.PK) plan to enter a "strategic partnership" with Japan's Mitsubishi (MMTOF.PK). One of the possibilities for the shape of this partnership would include PSA purchasing a stake of anywhere from 30 to 50% of Mitsubishi. The two firms already cooperate to a degree, sharing SUV platforms, and are in the process of building an assembly facility in Russia to manufacture Peugeot, Citroen, and Mitsubishi mid-sized cars and SUVs. In addition, Mitsubushi and Peugeot have agreed to develop a car based on Mitsubishi's i-MiEV car, which is to be sold in Europe under the Peugeot and Citroen nameplates by the end of 2010.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |

The Pragmatic Capitalist submits: Freight traffic posted big year over year gains for the week ending March 13th. What Does GM Really Think About the Volt?
John Petersen submits:I love IPO registration statements because they have to provide full and fair disclosure of all material facts and forward-looking statements must "bespeak caution." The following quote from the risk factors section on page 19 of the prospectus included in the Form S-1 Registration Statement that NewGM (MTLQQ.PK) filed yesterday says everything you need to know about the Volt and the other plug-in vehicles that currently reign as media darlings. "In some cases, the technologies that we plan to employ, such as hydrogen fuel cells and advanced battery technology, are not yet commercially practical and depend on significant future technological advances by us and by suppliers. For example, we have announced that we intend to produce by November 2010 the Chevrolet Volt, an electric car, which requires battery technology that has not yet proven to be commercially viable. There can be no assurance that these advances will occur in a timely or feasible way, that the funds that we have budgeted for these purposes will be adequate, or that we will be able to establish our right to these technologies. However, our competitors and others are pursuing similar technologies and other competing technologies, in some cases with more money available, and there can be no assurance that they will not acquire similar or superior technologies sooner than we do or on an exclusive basis or at a significant price advantage."Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
