CH Robinson: Sell This Train Short
Zachary Scheidt submits: Shorting stocks can be a risky business. Especially in a runaway market like we have seen over the past six months. While fundamental analysis and valuation techniques are helpful over a long period of time, short term market movements can turn the plans of even the most well respected analyst into dust. But despite the challenges, it still makes sense to understand fundamental concepts behind price movements. I can guarantee you that at some point, the pendulum will swing and prices will once again be affected by prospective earnings and less by investor psychology. CH Robinson Worldwide (CHRW) is one of the stocks that I want to be holding short when that transition takes place. Sure, the $9.8 billion dollar company has a 1.6% dividend yield and no debt. But the current stock price simply cannot be justified by the fundamentals of the company.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
BYD Set to Make Cautious Entry into U.S. Electric Car Market
Ravi Nagarajan submits:BYD (BYDDF.PK) is likely to select the Los Angeles market as its entry point for the all-electric e6 model according to an article in the Wall Street Journal. The selection of Southern California for the product introduction makes a great deal of sense given the high density of the region, concerns about air pollution, and the possibility that the car will be purchased by Hollywood celebrities eager to display their “green” credentials to the world. As we discussed earlier this year, the e6 model is unique because of the relatively long range that drivers can expect from a full charge. At 205 miles, the range is long enough to satisfy the requirements of any commuter and can also be useful for longer trips. Even more notable is the claim that a 50% charge can be achieved in only ten minutes. However, it should be noted that BYD appears to have reduced the maximum range estimate from the 249 mile estimate which appeared on its website earlier this year. In addition, the top speed of the vehicle is now listed at 87 mph and the zero to 100 kph estimate is 14 seconds, up from 8 seconds.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
Rail Traffic Continues to Trend Higher
The Pragmatic Capitalist submits: The latest data on rail traffic continues to show an upward trajectory though recovery is still showing signs of being weak. The AAR reports that US railroads originated 268K carloads up 1.4% versus 2009 and off 14.7% from 2008. Intermodal traffic rose 5.1% from 2008 and declined 10.7% from 2008. Breadth continued to improve as 14 of the 19 commodity groups are now reporting year over year gains. Metals, nonmetallic minerals, farm products and motor vehicles all reported double digit gains.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
Baltic Dry Index: A Wild Ride Higher
Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit: Given that it tracks the cost of shipping goods around the world, the Baltic Dry Index is often looked to as a leading indicator of the global economy. However, if the global economy was anywhere near as volatile as this index, we'd all be a lot more stressed. While the index is considerably higher today than it was a year ago, it has been on a wild ride. Following the 49% decline back in the Summer of 2009, the Baltic Dry Index rallied 113.5% before once again falling 44.5% from November through February. Since then, the index has rallied 51% and is up 8% in the last week alone. Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
