Pricing for Transport Subsidies: Why Not?
Ryan Avent submits: Ok, mere hours into my first day and I already have requests. Commenter dWj has a good question:If we (Obama, Bloomberg, right-thinking Americans) ever get true carbon pricing and congestion pricing, does that mean we should quit subsidizing public transportation? Note that public transit creates negative externalities; we subsidize it because it's a consumption-substitute for activities with far more negative externalities. If we correct that, the subsidy becomes perverse, right?Complete Story »

Will Mileage Standards Get People to Drive Less?
Ryan Avent submits: It seems that the Obama administration will be introducing some tough (ish) new mileage standards for cars and light trucks — 42 mpg for cars and 26.2 mpg for light trucks by 2016. Kevin Drum is happy: This is really important stuff. Cap-and-trade is the centerpiece of the Waxman-Markey energy bill, and it’s a critical part of any global warming plan. (Krugman’s column today strikes the right tone on Waxman-Markey, by the way.) As important as it is, though, I think of it as sort of like a headwind, something that helps get all the ships moving in the right direction. But that’s not enough. There are plenty of other currents and eddies and storm systems that, individually, aren’t as important as pricing carbon, but put together are actually far more important. Mileage standards for cars are one of them: pricing carbon will help motivate people to drive less and buy more efficient cars, but federal mileage standards will do it a lot faster and a lot more efficiently. Waxman-Markey is no substitute.Complete Story »

By the terms of the deal, Chrysler was to supply Nissan with a full-sized truck based on its Ram pickup. Cash-For-Clunkers Reveals Weakness Among Detroit Brands
TheCarConnection.com submits: It's obvious from the comments on this site and others in the High Gear Media family that Cash-for-Clunkers remains a hot-button issue, and new data about the program is likely to fuel the fire: according to stats from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, most car buyers used Cash-for-Clunkers to swap out their domestic ride (frequently a Ford Explorer or F-150) for a foreign model. The notable exception: Michigan, where over 81% of Cash-for-Clunkers trade-ins went toward the purchase of a domestic automobile. Other states along the Rust Belt leaned slightly in Detroit's direction, but on the whole, 57% of Americans ditched the Big Three for something foreign like the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. Clearly, Detroit has its work cut out for it. We'll see if all those Howie Long ads and Chrysler's new campaigns pay off. [DetNews]Complete Story »
