Rail Traffic Remains Mixed The Pragmatic Capitalist submits: The latest data from the AAR continues to show a near-term rebound in rail traffic trends, however, the bigger picture is showing a more mixed recovery. For the week ending January 30th, total carloads jumped 7% year over year, but declined 12.7% compared to 2008. Intermodal traffic was also mixed with a 7.5% jump from 2009, but down 9.7% from 2008. Breadth was again positive this week as 13 of the 19 commodity groups showed gains. Toyota Penalized the Maximum $16.4 Million Ockham Research submits: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has levied a $16.4 million penalty against the world’s largest automaker, Toyota Motor (TM). US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said that Toyota “knowingly hid a dangerous defect.” The penalty is far greater than the NHTSA’s previous largest fine, a $1 million penalty against General Motors for faulty windshield wipers. “We now have proof that Toyota failed to live up to its legal obligations,” LaHood said in the statement. “Worse yet, they knowingly hid a dangerous defect for months from U.S. officials and did not take action to protect millions of drivers and their families.”Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
