Richard Shaw (QVM Group) submits: For the young person just starting out on a periodic savings and investment program with many years of compounding ahead, several thousand additional dollars put into their savings over the holding period of each car they own creates a significant capital value over a lifetime. The conventional versus hybrid car purchase choice can provide that extra investment capital. Looking purely at the economics of purchasing a hybrid car versus a conventional gasoline only car, we can’t justify the hybrids. There may or may not be environmental benefits, and there may or may not be rare earth scarcity issues for lithium batteries, and there may or may not be other important social or climatic issues that are outside of our competencies and the realm of direct cost analysis. Airlines' Unit Revenue Expected to Take Off
Zacks.com submits: The recovery in the global economy is expected to benefit the airline industry with unit revenues slated to rise in the second quarter of 2010. Rising fares, an improvement in international traffic and an overall recovery is expected to drive this growth. Last year's economic downturn and the preceding year's steep oil prices had adversely affected the airline industry. We believe that this news will have a positive impact on share price movements of airline companies in the near future. Despite concerns about the recent rise in fuel prices, recovery in business travel and cargo has accelerated along with gains in international and domestic passenger revenue. Southwest’s Aggressive Move: An Economic Experiment
Wall Street Cheat Sheet submits: By Joanna BromleySouthwest Airlines (LUV) announced this past Monday that it would acquire AirTran Airways (AAI) for $1.4 billion in cash and stock. The details of the deal: AirTran shareholders will receive at least $3.75 in cash and 0.321 shares of Southwest stock for each share of AirTran. On a per share basis, shareholders are looking at between $7.25 and $7.75, depending on the price movements of Southwest for a 20-day period near the completion of the merger. Southwest will adjust the amounts and ratios of stock and cash included in the deal depending on these stock movements.
