Berkshire + Burlington = Hypocrisy, Expediency and Full Dose of Ego?
I've gotten tons of calls and emails since the Berkshire (BRK.A)/Burlington (BNI) deal was announced. I'm flattered that so many people care about my thoughts (or are just kind enough to humor me). Having followed Buffett since before he was widely known and cool, I know what a Buffett acquisition looks like. Burlington is out of character.Whether it's motivation, price, method of payment, etc, Burlington is unlike any Berkshire deal I am aware of. While most people focus on the massive size of the deal, it is the least surprising aspect of the transaction. After all, Warren Buffett has often talked about hunting for elephants.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |

John Petersen submits: Generation specific cultural references can be treacherous ground for bloggers because the flashback effect is usually limited to readers with long and vivid memories. In this case, however, the lessons of history are so relevant that I'll accept the risk and offer some context for younger readers. Southwest's Expansionary M&A
atmabus submits: M&A can work, just not for the elephants in the room. This week, I intertwine two topics I've discussed before in light of major events announced last week in the airline industry.First, the good. I like to write about admirable companies; those that are profitable, well run, culturally hip, and leave a positive footprint on society. I wrote about Starbucks (SBUX) in great detail; and certainly Southwest Airlines (LUV) is one that tops my list.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
