AutoNation: Riding Out Lower Volume
Zacks.com submits: AutoNation (AN) has revealed a 44% rise in profits to $65 million or 36 cents per share in the third quarter from $44 million or 25 cents per share in the year-ago quarter. (See earnings call transcript.) With this, the largest automotive retailer in the U.S. has inched past the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 35 cents per share. Despite lower new vehicle industry volume, the retailer benefited (especially in the Domestic and Import segments) primarily from “Cash for Clunkers” cash incentive vehicle-exchange program. The program, launched by the U.S. Government in late July and open for a month, succeeded in attracting a large number of consumers to the retailer’s showrooms. It aided the retailer’s results for the latest quarter by 7 cents per share.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
Ford: Zero (Nearly) to Double Digits in 13 Months Flat
Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit: It's hard to believe that just 13 months ago this week, shares of Ford (F) nearly broke the buck. Today, the company is trading above $10 per share for the first time in over four years, and it's the envy of all other American car makers (or what's left of them). Amazingly, Ford (F) is one S&P 500 company that is actually higher today than it was when the S&P 500 peaked in October 2007.click to enlargeComplete Story » seekingalpha.com |
Like Diana Shipping, Paragon Shows Great Potential to Benefit From Recovery
Dan Wieman submits:After my recent post on Diana Shipping, I received an email asking me to look at Paragon Shipping. I have to say that I’m impressed. While Diana (DSX) has a stronger balance sheet, Paragon (PRGN) is certainly not over leveraged with a debt to equity ratio of 0.78:1. At year-end Paragon had $134 million in cash and $309 million in debt (current maturities and long-term debt). In 2009, the company had almost $100 million in what I would consider owner cash flow (net income plus depreciation) and no capital expenditures or ship purchases. This cash flow was produced by a company that currently has a $240 million market cap. If that valuation isn’t appealing enough, the company trades at 53% of book value.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |

Delta to Grow on High Travel Demand
Zacks.com submits: Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL), the world’s largest airline, expects third quarter unit revenue to rise on recovering travel demand. The demand for air travel has been growing more than expected so far in September. The economic downturn in 2009 and the oil price hike in 2008 had affected the airline industry during the past two years. Now, with an economic resurgence, demand for air travel is increasing from last year’s depressed levels.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
