First Yearly Increase in Trucking Index Since 2008
Mark J. Perry submits: "The American Trucking Associations advance seasonally adjusted (SA) Truck Tonnage Index climbed 2.1% in December, following a 2.6% increase in November. The latest gain boosted the SA index from 106.2 in November to 108.4 in December, its highest level since November 2008. Compared with December 2008, SA tonnage jumped 6.6%, which was the first year-over-year increase since September 2008. For all of 2009, the tonnage index was down 8.3%, which was the largest annual decrease since a 12.3% plunge in 1982.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
Rail Freight Continues to Post Big Gains
The Pragmatic Capitalist submits: Freight traffic posted big year over year gains for the week ending March 13th. According to the AAR, railroads posted their third consecutive week of gains: U.S. railroads originated 287,837 carloads during the week, up 3.2 percent from the comparable week in 2009, but down 12 percent from 2008. Ford to Clear More Than $4B in Debt
Zacks.com submits: Ford Motor Co. (F) has revealed that it would pay more than $4 billion in debt to the United Automobile Workers (UAW) retiree health care trust in order to improve its financial position. The company would pay almost the entire amount in cash instead of using stock, as had been decided previously. The automaker also cleared about $3 billion on its 2013 revolving credit facility in April ahead of schedule at a discount of 2%.
