Energy Storage: Chrysler - A123 Alliance Likely to Spark Interest in Sector
John Petersen submits:On April 6th, Chrysler LLC announced the creation of a strategic alliance whereby A123 Systems, Inc. will become a primary battery supplier for Chrysler's planned line of plug-in electric vehicles. This is a huge step toward rebuilding America's domestic battery manufacturing infrastructure and both companies should be congratulated. The next steps I see in my murky crystal ball are finalization of A123's pending IPO coupled with an announcement that A123's $1.8 billion loan request under the DOE's Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program has been approved. If the foundation has been properly laid, it will all come together very quickly. I've been following A123 since it first filed its SEC registration statement. While the IPO was delayed by last fall's market implosion, its team stayed the course and announced plans to build a $2.3 billion battery manufacturing facility in early January. To help pay for the planned facility, A123 applied for a $1.8 billion loan under the DOE's Advanced Vehicle Technology Program.Complete Story »

Lear Chooses Not to Pay Its Bond Interest. Stock Shoots Higher
Tyler Durden submits: When a stock goes up by about 10% on a bankruptcy pre-announcement, there is nothing much more to be said. In a press release earlier, Lear (LEA), critical D-3 parts supplier, and target of a Carl Icahn takeover attempt in 2007 (I bet shareholders who voted down that $37.25 offer back then are feeling really retarded right now), has announced that, just like all other nationalized car companies, it has decided it feels no need to pay its bonds and has entered a 30 day grace period (if the payment has still not been made at the end of the period, add one more company to Taxpayer Capital LP's portfolio). The Company is utilizing the 30-day grace period applicable to the interest payments while it continues discussions regarding a capital restructuring with its lenders and others. Under the applicable indentures relating to the Senior Notes, the use of the 30-day grace period does not constitute a default that permits acceleration of the Senior Notes or any other indebtedness.Complete Story »

Toyota to Mazda: It's Easy Being Green
Zacks.com submits: Rumors have surfaced that Japan's largest automaker Toyota Motor (TM) would provide inputs to Hiroshima-based rival Mazda in a hybrid technology tie-up. Upon reaching an agreement, Toyota would supply key components of a hybrid system, such as batteries, motors, control units, and other electronic parts.Recently, Mazda has been struggling hard to carve a niche for itself in the environment-friendly and fuel-efficient vehicles market. In an effort to reduce CO2 emissions, the company plans to raise the average fuel economy in all its vehicles at least 30% by 2015, through powertrain renovations and the introduction of new platforms.Complete Story »

Buffett Sells More Moody's Shares: Exit or Rebalancing?
Market Folly submits:While the dominant headlines yesterday centered around Warren Buffett & Berkshire Hathaway's (BRK.A) acquisition of Burlington Nothern Santa Fe (BNI), we wanted to highlight one of his other recent moves.Having already trimmed his stake in Moody's (MCO) a few times prior, legendary investor Warren Buffett has sold even more shares of the ratings agency. On October 28th, 2009, Buffett sold 1,133,027 shares at a price of $24.8637. Additionally, he sold 19,600 shares the next day at a price of $25.2728 per share. This brings his total ownership to 38,066,685 shares. These sales are in addition to other transactions he completed back in the beginning of September where he sold 794,388 shares between $26-27. While he has obviously been selling shares, we need to highlight that he does still indeed own quite a sizable chunk of the company. We simply take note because he has now made multiple sales within a few months. Complete Story »
