Bombardier's Geopolitical Problems: Zhuzhou Will End Up in Montreal
George Gutowski submits: Bombardier (BDRAF.PK) ran into some geopolitical problems with CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co. Ltd (ZHUZF.PK) threatening legal action unless the new Montreal Metro contract was re-opened for bidding. They have promised to build locally in Montreal. As best we can determine, Zhuzhou is owned by the Chinese Government and operates very similarly to a government owned corporation. They have significant manufacturing experience in China but the promised plant in Montreal would be brand new. Bombardier has long been winning contracts in China and now the Chinese are becoming free traders and want to walk through the looking glass.Complete Story »

Will New Fuel Economy Standards Make Stop-Start Engine Technology Standard Equipment?
John Petersen submits: On April 1st the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration [NHTSA] and the Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] announced a joint final rule establishing fuel economy standards for all light duty vehicles sold in the United States. Since the existing standards don't apply to light trucks, I used vehicle sales forecasts from the Energy Information Administration's "Annual Energy Outlook 2010" to estimate a current baseline fuel economy of 19.6 mpg. The new rules will be phased in over a five-year period beginning with the 2012 Model Year and are certain to drive rapid evolution in the auto industry. The following table summarizes the new fuel economy standards: Model Year Passenger Cars (mpg) Light Trucks (mpg) Combined Fleet (mpg) 2010(1) 27.5 23.5 2011(1) 30.2 24.1 2012(2) 33.3 25.4 29.7 2013(2) 34.2 26.0 30.5 2014(2) 34.9 26.6 31.3 2015(2) 36.2 27.5 32.6 2016(2) 37.8 28.8 34.1 (1) Source: Wikipedia Corporate Average Fuel Economy (2) Source: NHTSA CAFE-GHG Fact SheetComplete Story »

Boeing Is Overvalued by at Least 25%
StreetAuthority submits: By David Sterman Cyclical stocks have always been tricky for investors. At the bottom of an economic cycle, they can appear to have fairly high P/E ratios as investors look ahead to better times. When the cycle improves and approaches a peak, the P/E multiple then tends to shrink as investors brace for an earnings downdraft. That's why a company like U.S. Steel (NYSE: X) can trade for 30 or 40 times profits during bad times, but end up trading for only six or seven times profits when earnings growth has maxed out.Complete Story »
