Wagoner's Firing: The Surprise That Wasn't
Paul Kedrosky submits: Last night, GM's Rick Wagoner was fired (sort of), and the predictable opinioneering sorts started their predictably wheezing opinioneering engines. Go elsewhere if you want that sort of thing. I can't even imagine it. Because is it really a surprise that Obama's auto task force is saying that Chrysler isn't viable and that [[GM]] is a mess? I really hope most of the surprise is more like meta-surprise: People are surprised that politicians are almost telling the truth about something. That's exciting and fun, but that's about it.Complete Story »

China Inks Deal with Siemens for World's Largest High Speed Rail Network
James Rickman submits:China plans to create the world's largest high-speed rail network. The Chinese Ministry of Railways is planning to buy 1,000 high-speed trains within the next few years. The current order from Siemens (SI) includes the first trains to serve the new high-speed line between Bejing and Shanghai. German train producer Siemens has inked a $1 billion contract to build 100 new high-speed trains for China. The company's Velaro train has a top speed of 218mph (350.84km/h). A typical train will have 16 cars and carry more than 1,000 passengers. With a total length of more than 1,300 feet (396.24m), the new trains will be the world's longest single high-speed units in use, according to Siemens.Complete Story »

If FedEx Can Compete with the U.S. Government, Why Can't Health Insurers?
The Obama Administration's announcement concerning its vision for a reformed American health care system, a vision predicated upon a Government based option to private insurance, has provoked quite a debate--one that seems able to fill the op-ed pages of major newspapers on a daily basis. The arguments, both in favor of and against a government intervention into the health care realm, are for the most part legitimate, provocative, and varied. Opponents of the reform measures outlined by the President will generally put forth arguments that revolve around one or more of the following points:Complete Story »

Two Telling Charts - TRANQ and BDI
Bruce Pile submits:If you had to pick just two charts to look at in trying to gauge the future of the stock market, you'd be hard pressed to come up with any two much better than the transports without the rails (TRANQ) and the Baltic Dry Index (BDI).The BDI is a measure of actual planned (not speculated) shipping of dry goods and the Nasdaq Transportation Index, almost devoid of the rails, is a measure of what Dow Theory wants it to measure - transportation of goods activity. Why do we want to exclude the rails? Because they have become so heavily levered to commodity transport and commodities have become so heavily levered to the U.S. dollar mess. The transport indexes with a lot of rails look better, but that's just because the poor finances of the U.S. are driving down the dollar and driving up investor demand for commodities - the unprintable money. So to get a more honest look at economic health, it would be good to look at transports with no rails. TRANQ has just one last I checked.Complete Story »
