Holman Jenkins' WSJ Editorial Shreds the Administration's Auto Policy
Tom Lindmark submits:Just in case you missed it, you might want to check out Holman Jenkins editorial in the WSJ yesterday in which he likens President Obama to a king in pursuit of an unachievable goal. He once again shows why he has the best grasp around of the economics of the car industry. Here’s a sample:Complete Story »

Supreme Court Stays Chrysler Deal
Tyler Durden submits: Developing Story. Liquidation for Chrysler after Fiat (FIATY.PK) bounces asap? Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg put a temporary hold Monday on the deal to sell Chrysler to save it from collapse. Her order, however, simply gives her or the full Court more time to ponder whether to postpone it further, or allow it to go forward.Complete Story »

Cass Freight Indices Bouncing
Calafia Beach Pundit submits: A reader mentioned the Cass Freight Indices the other day, and so I thought I would have a look at them. Here's a chart of all the available data. My first impression is that while these indices are in synch with the bounce we have seen in so many other areas of the economy this year, they are of limited value.I am perplexed as to why the Shipments index has drifted lower over the past 20 years, considering that economic activity (real GDP) has expanded by 90% since 1990. It is interesting that the Expenditures index is now up by exactly the same as the rise in the PCE deflator since 1990 (55%), but why it should have risen so dramatically in 2006, about two years before the big spike in oil prices, is puzzling. Comments welcome.Complete Story »

Volvo: Sure, Geely Will Keep Production in Europe ...
TheCarConnection.com submits: We've been keeping a close eye on the evolving Ford/Volvo/Geely saga. So far, the biggest point of contention in the brou-ha-ha has been Ford's concerns about intellectual property, which Geely might or might not respect after the ink dries. (China hasn't exactly been at the forefront of IP law.) However, there have also been unspoken worries about the shift in production that could result from such a deal, moving factories and jobs from Europe to the Far East. Geely tried to quell some of those concerns by saying that it intends to keep Volvo's production in Europe -- if the sale goes through, of course -- but there's also talk of a new, 300,000-capacity plant in China. Awkward. [Reuters via egmCarTech]Complete Story »
