Why GM Is Ready for a Rebound
Rick Newman submits:It may take awhile to convince car buyers, but General Motors (GMGMQ.PK) has emerged from bankruptcy with better prospects for a profitable future than virtually any of the automaker's critics predicted a few months ago. Here's why: It exited bankruptcy in record time. Chrysler surprised nearly everybody by emerging from bankruptcy in 40 days. GM, a far bigger and more complex company, beat that by a couple of days. That gives the "new GM" a fighting chance to escape the cloud of failure that has hung over the company for much of the last year. "It helps them get the idea that 'GM equals bankruptcy' out of consumers' minds," says Michael Robinet of forecasting firm CSM Worldwide.Complete Story »

GM: Are eBay and a $4,000 Car Enough to Turn Things Around?
Justin Fogarty submits:Not long ago, many people wanted to leave GM on the rusty scrap heap of history. They wrote the company off as a health care provider who happened to make cars, too behind the times and inflexible to keep up with global demand for more efficient cars or cope with America’s plummeting sales figures on their profitable SUVs. But recently, GM announced two new strategies, which if executed properly (and profitably), could mark a turning point for the auto maker; selling cars on eBay (EBAY) and plans for a $4,000 car. Last week, GM began selling new cars on eBay through their own branded eBay portal. While the auto OEMs have long used auctions to get better value from their suppliers, they’ve never taken the plunge when it comes to new cars. And while used car auctions (live and over eBay) are a staple for dealers, car flippers and used car buyers, now new car customers can get in on the action … and savings.Complete Story »

What If We Invested $680 Billion in Infrastructure?
Ryan Avent submits: What if for one year — just one year — we allocated as much money for infrastructure as we did for defense? What if? Well, this year, that would mean devoting $680 billion to investments in infrastructure. That’s more than $200 billion more than Oberstar’s entire proposed transportation reauthorization bill, which was itself a large increase over the previous transportation law. There’s probably no way we could spend all that money at once, but it would nicely capitalize an infrastructure bank, and the promise of a steady flow of funds would get states thinking about real, long-term investments.Complete Story »

The Baltic Dry Index: Digging Deeper
Thomas MacLeod submits:Mention shipping stocks and one of the first things that comes to mind is the Baltic Dry Index. While the Baltic Dry Index is interesting and useful it is also misleading. This is essentially because of the way in which it is constructed. The BDI is an average of three indices the Capesize, Panamax and Supramax. Baltic Dry Index (Click to enlarge) The following gives one a bit of an idea as to the classifications:What is interesting is how the Handysize index is excluded from the Baltic Dry Index. This is no big deal, but the problem really lies with how volatile the Capesize index is. Due to the relatively small numbers of Capesize vessels the demand and supply is very volatile compared to the numerous numbers of Handysize vessels.Complete Story »
