GM Backs Out of Magna Deal: It's Each Nation to Itself
Edward Harrison submits:I have been reading press accounts of the GM decision to back out of the Opel/Vauxhall sale to the Magna (MGA)/Sberbank consortium from various countries. There are a lot of different perspectives on this event in the U.S., Belgium, Spain, Germany, Russia, the U.K and elsewhere, because a lot of players are involved. The conclusion I come to is that economic nationalism is the driving motivator behind much of what you read. To the degree we continue to experience a soft global economy, this should be seen as a warning of how individual actors will respond in the future.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
Japan Airlines Likely to Join Skyteam: A Big Win for Stakeholders
Vaughn Cordle submits:Reports from various sources are that JAL (JALSF.PK) will officially sign the deal after it is finally endorsed by new JAL top management that will be inaugurated after the JAL group applies for the application of the Corporate Rehabilitation Law. This could happen perhaps as early as this week. It's interesting to note that the Enterprise Turnaround Inititive Corp of Japan (ETIC) is estimating the annual benefits of joining Delta (DAL) and Skyteam to be 17.2 billion yen, or $189 million U.S. I initially roughed out a $300 million opportunity-cost for JAL if they did not join DAL and included the analysis in a research note to clients in late October last year. Delta's later estimate, if I recall, was in the $400 million range. Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |

Telvent Git S.A.: Best Peak Oil Investments Meet the Smart Grid
Tom Konrad (AltEnergyStocks) submits: I'm bullish on Smart Transportation, which is my term for applying information technology to make our transportation system more efficient. The majority of my list of Smart Transportation Stocks focus on GPS navigation. I've been a fan of GPS navigation ever since 2001, when I first experienced the relief of using one while driving in an unfamiliar city. But I'm much less enthusiastic about GPS Navigation stocks: I feel the industry is too competitive, which is great for the consumer, but not so great for the shareholder. Hence, I'm drawn to the three Smart Transportation stocks that apply IT to transportation infrastructure, enabling congestion-based tolling and the better timing of traffic lights. The three stocks I've found are AECOM Technology Corporation (ACM), Cubic Corporation (CUB), and Telvent Git S.A. (TLVT). AECOM provides technical and management services to governments, some of which is on Smart Transportation projects. Cubic develops and installs transportation fare collection systems and defense electronics, while Telvent provides IT services to a broad range of transportation and energy infrastructure markets.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
